New singers invited to join choir for Handel’s ‘Best Bits’ tribute concert

Rehearsals for East Grinstead Choral Society’s summer concert, which will feature the “best bits” from one of the world’s greatest composers, begin on 25 April and new members would be very welcome.

The concert will be dedicated to the memory of the choir’s assistant musical director Ray Maulkin who died recently.

“Handel – The Oratorio - Handel's best bits" was created by Ray and musical director Richard Jenkinson for a sister choir, Kent Chorus, last year.

So well received was it that East Grinstead Choral Society thought it would make a perfect tribute to Ray at their own Summer Concert, which takes place at Imberhorne Lower School on Saturday 29 June.

The concert will also include Morten Lauridsen’s “O magnum mysterium; Sure on this shining night” and Eric Whitacre’s “Seal Lullaby”.

It follows their recent stunningly successful performance of JS Bach’s B Minor Mass where they were joined by five professional soloists and an orchestra playing period instruments.

East Grinstead Choral Society chair, Gill Olliver, said: “For six years Ray has been our most wonderful assistant musical director and accompanist and a true friend to the choir. We have all benefited from his expertise, care and humour, and he will be greatly missed.

“The Handel selection he created with Richard Jenkinson is really beautiful, both to listen to and to perform. We would very much welcome anyone who would like to sing this and the other works with us.

“There's no audition to worry about - all we ask for is enthusiasm and a love of singing,” said Gill.

The choir rehearses every Thursday evening during term time from 7.30pm to 9.45pm at the Jubilee Community Centre, East Grinstead.
