East Grinstead Choral Society welcomes New Year and new interim MD with 'An American Celebration'

East Grinstead Choral Society will sing hello to 2021 with an American Celebration led by their new interim musical director Laurence Williams.

The spring term starts on Thursday 7 January with a Zoom rehearsal at 7.45pm and new members would be made very welcome.

The choir has plans to resume rehearsals at the Jubilee Community Centre when Covid-19 guidelines permit. These would be for a limited number of people in person and but would also be available on Zoom.

An American Celebration will be an exciting and varied selection of music comprising:

  • Aaron Copland: selections from “Old American Songs”

  • Leonard Bernstein: “West Side Story Medley” (edited by Len Thomas)

  • Benjamin Britten: selections from “Five Flower Songs” (“Fair Daffodils”, “The Evening Primrose”, “The Ballad of Green Broom”)

  • Elaine Hagenberg: “I will be a Child of Peace”

Laurence Williams is a freelance musician working both internationally and in the UK as a bass-baritone soloist, choir-trainer, organist and teacher.

"It is such a pleasure to be joining EGCS as their interim Musical Director,” said Laurence.

“As someone who grew up in this area, getting to work with this well-known choir is a great privilege. I look forward to making music with all the members, be that over zoom or hopefully in a live setting as soon as restrictions permit.

“Singing, even individually can bring us joy and hope through these difficult times."

As a choir-trainer, Laurence works with various choirs including Islington Choral Society and Epworth Choir Woking among others. He has worked extensively in schools, having been director for both Fulham Prep School Chamber Choir and The Peterborough School Chapel Choirs.

He has his own teaching studio in London and loves working with non-professional singers, cultivating a love for music through healthy singing.

EGCS Chair Gill Olliver said: “Laurence is an experienced musician with an infectious enthusiasm and we’re delighted that he’s joining us as our interim musical director. Together we’ve chosen an exciting selection of songs to lift our spirits for the new year.”
